Alaska Big Wildlife in Winter

The Alaska Big Wildlife Tour is a naturalist and conservationist top pic attraction while visiting Anchorage, Alaska. The tour starts right after we pick up from your hotel and head towards the scenic Seward Highway. This road is considered to be America’s most beautiful and scenic road, crossing mountain passes and majestic valleys. Along the way we will try to spot moose, eagles and other wildlife. The Zig zagging along the Turn-again Arm offers the breathtaking beauty of Cook Inlet Bay and the Chugach State Park mountains.

Approximately 45 minutes on the Seward Highway we arrived to the Alaska Wildlife Conservation Center. The center opened to the public in 1993. It is located on 140 acres at the southern edge of Turn-again Arm and the entrance to Portage Valley. The center’s mission is to provide care and rehabilitation for injured and orphaned wildlife and to provide wildlife education and awareness. Animals that are unable to be released or survive in the wild are given refuge in the center’s spacious habitats.

Here people can safely get close, observe and photograph some of Alaska’s largest land animals, including moose, bison, elk, deer, caribou, bears muskox, small mammals and birds of prey. During spring and summer, visitors can often witness the rehabilitation of orphaned baby animals of various species.
After a fascinating visit to the Alaska Wildlife Conservation Center, where you get up close with Alaska’s iconic wildlife, you’ll take a scenic drive to Girdwood, a charming mountain town nestled in the stunning Chugach Mountains.

Once in Girdwood, you’ll board the Alyeska Tram, which carries you up to the top of Alyeska Mountain. The ride offers breathtaking views of glaciers, sprawling valleys, and the shimmering Turnagain Arm below. At the summit, you’ll have time to savor the fresh alpine air before heading back down to Girdwood for a light lunch at one of the cozy local eateries, where the flavors are as warm as the hospitality. Afterward, you’ll take a drive back to downtown Anchorage, ending your tour and feeling like you’ve experienced a perfect day of Alaska’s natural beauty and small-town charm.

Minimum age 6 years old. Families traveling with children 6 years or younger should inquire about a private tour.
